Overview
Drawing from family memories as well as myths and popular legends, Vicente Matte plays around with forms and colour to explore the tension of intimacy and the enigmatic in our everyday relationships. His canvases convey the subtle movements witnessed in a public square, where people interact with each other and their surroundings; the familiar quiet of a walk in the woods; the suspended atmosphere of a family car ride. Rendered in distemper and oil, their surfaces reflect processes of layering and removal, amounting to a temporal density. Created in a self-built studio at the bottom of Matte's garden in Santiago, Chile, these paintings embody the fluid interconnection between art and life and the fullness of experience, with all its joys, frustrations and everything in between.
